Khoj replaces 2 paid apps
One open-source tool, 2 subscriptions it can stand in for. Each pairing below is curated and verified by hand, with the honest catch spelled out. No votes, no pay-to-list.
LicenceAGPL-3.0
Plateformesyour machine or their cloud
InstallationUse the hosted app, or self-host the server with Docker or pip and optionally install its desktop/browser/Obsidian clients
ModèlesLocal OpenAI-compatible servers such as Ollama, llama.cpp, LM Studio or vLLM, plus OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini and other cloud APIs
DonnéesHosted accounts store chats and indexed documents in Khoj's cloud; self-hosting stores application data and vector embeddings in the operator's PostgreSQL/pgvector database while original synced files remain at their source
ConfigurationThe hosted app is immediate, but private self-hosting requires Docker or Python, PostgreSQL/pgvector, model configuration and an initial document index

A personal AI that searches the web and your files; broader than Perplexity, and noticeably heavier to run.
the catchIt is a broader personal assistant, but its web-search freshness, source coverage, and answer-engine polish are weaker than Perplexity's managed index and research modes.

Search and chat across personal files, now self-host only because the cloud shut down.
the catchIt is strongest at searching and chatting over existing files, not Saner.AI's frictionless capture and automatic visual connection of new knowledge.
