Should you build your own Raindrop.io?
Visual bookmark manager for saving, tagging, and searching links
A personal bookmark saver with tags, full-text search, and screenshots is a very tractable small app.
ENOriginal research content in English. Original prompt preserved in English.
Build me a personal bookmark manager to replace Raindrop.io. Requirements:
- A local web app: Node + Express + better-sqlite3 on localhost:4040, server-rendered,
minimal JS.
- Save via a bookmarklet that POSTs the current URL to /save; the server fetches the
page, pulls title/description/og:image with metascraper, and stores the readable
article text (@mozilla/readability) for search.
- Bookmarks take free-form tags (comma entry, autocomplete from existing tags) and an
optional note.
- Full-text search across title, note, and archived page text with SQLite FTS5; filter
by tag, newest first.
- List view: favicon, title, domain, tags, saved date. A weekly node-cron job re-checks
links and flags 404s.
- Import from a Netscape bookmarks HTML export; export everything as JSON and CSV from
an /export route.
- Binds to localhost only; no accounts, no telemetry, the whole archive is one SQLite
file I can back up.
- Out of scope: mobile apps and full page-snapshot archiving, the stored text is the
archive. No team collections.
- README: how to install the bookmarklet and where the DB file lives. The prompt opens pre-filled in your agent. Review it before running. · this prompt is generated from the build plan · improve it via PR
What would building your own look like?
Build a browser extension/bookmarklet, save URL metadata to SQLite/Postgres, tag it, optionally archive page text, and provide search.
What you will need
- browser extension or bookmarklet
- small hosted backend or local database
- page metadata/extraction library
They pay because bookmarks are boring until import/export, search, mobile, and extension reliability matter.

Is it cheaper to build or buy Raindrop.io?
Adjust the numbers: hours to build, your hourly rate, running costs and the subscription price.
Over 24 months, subscribing is cheaper.
Starting hours estimated from the analysis (one sitting). Does not price what you give up (support, integrations, security).
Can I rebuild Raindrop.io?
Yes. A competent AI coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) can build a usable personal Raindrop.io replacement in one session with the prompt on this page. It runs on your own machine or server with no subscription.
How much does Raindrop.io cost?
Raindrop.io costs about $3/mo (Pro, checked 07/30/2026), which is $27.60 per year. That’s what you save by replacing it with one prompt.
What do I lose by replacing Raindrop.io?
Honestly: mobile apps; browser-extension polish; permanent archiving; visual previews; team collections; import/export polish. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.
Is there an open-source alternative to Raindrop.io?
Yes: Karakeep (A bookmark junk drawer that labels itself and keeps the contents.) Linkwarden (Raindrop with a filing cabinet and a copy of every page.) linkding (Pinboard with a nicer face and no annual invoice.)
