Should you build your own YNAB?
Personal budgeting app built around zero-based budgeting and habit formation
A zero-based budget app with accounts, categories, envelopes, and reports is very buildable; bank sync and habit coaching are the main paid value.
ENOriginal research content in English. Original prompt preserved in English.
Build me a zero-based budgeting app to replace YNAB. Requirements:
- A local web app: Node + Express + better-sqlite3, server-rendered, binds to
localhost only.
- Accounts (checking, credit card, cash) and categories in groups. Every dollar of
inflow gets assigned; a To Be Budgeted header shows what is unassigned and goes
red if I over-assign.
- Budget view: month grid of category · assigned · activity · available, with
available balances rolling over month to month.
- Transactions: a fast keyboard entry form plus CSV import from bank exports, with
payee-to-category memory so repeat payees auto-fill.
- Reconcile flow: enter the real bank balance, the app shows the difference and
marks matched transactions cleared.
- Reports: spending by category per month and net worth over time, drawn with
Chart.js.
- Nightly copy of budget.db to backups/budget-YYYY-MM-DD.db, keep 30.
- No accounts, no telemetry, and no bank credentials anywhere; CSV import is the
only way money data enters.
- Out of scope: automatic bank sync, mobile apps, and shared budgets. A weekly CSV
import is the habit that replaces sync.
- README: how to map my bank's CSV columns on first import. The prompt opens pre-filled in your agent. Review it before running. · this prompt is generated from the build plan · improve it via PR
What would building your own look like?
Build account/category tables, assign dollars to categories, import transactions, reconcile balances, and show budget reports.
What you will need
- local or hosted database
- CSV import
- optional bank aggregation API
- reporting charts
- backups
They pay because the method and mobile/bank-sync habit are easier to follow than a spreadsheet.

Is it cheaper to build or buy YNAB?
Adjust the numbers: hours to build, your hourly rate, running costs and the subscription price.
Over 24 months, subscribing is cheaper.
Starting hours estimated from the analysis (weekend). Does not price what you give up (support, integrations, security).
Can I rebuild YNAB?
Yes. A competent AI coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) can build a usable personal YNAB replacement in one session with the prompt on this page. It runs on your own machine or server with no subscription.
How much does YNAB cost?
YNAB costs about $14.99/mo (Monthly Plan, checked 10/20/2026), which is $109 per year. That’s what you save by replacing it with one prompt.
What do I lose by replacing YNAB?
Honestly: bank sync; mobile apps; educational method/content; family sharing; polished reports; support; habit design. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.
Is there an open-source alternative to YNAB?
Yes: Actual Budget (Envelope budgeting, imports and rules on your own disk; bank sync is optional, not the landlord.) OpenBudgeteer (YNAB-style buckets in a Docker box; bank sync and habit coaching did not make the container.) Aspire Budgeting (A polished zero-based budget living in Google Sheets; CSV imports and auto-categorization are the paid shortcut.)
