Should you build your own Zapier?

No-code automation platform connecting thousands of SaaS apps

A few personal automations are easy; Zapier's moat is the 9,000+ app integration catalog, auth handling, retries, task history, UI, and reliability.

The complete prompt
Build me a personal automation runner to replace Zapier, for the handful of pipelines I actually use. Requirements:

- One Node process on my VPS: Express for incoming webhooks, node-cron for
schedules. A pipeline is a plain JS file in pipelines/ exporting a trigger (cron
expression or webhook path) and an async run(payload).
- Steps are just code: fetch() calls to the APIs I need, every key in .env. Adding
an integration means writing 20 lines, not finding a connector.
- Every run logged to SQLite (better-sqlite3): pipeline, trigger payload, status,
duration, error. Failures retry 3 times with exponential backoff via p-retry.
- A /runs page (bound to localhost) showing the last 100 runs with status and an
  expandable payload/error view, plus a re-run button.
- After the final failed retry, notify me via an ntfy topic in .env.
- Webhook URLs include a per-pipeline secret token; reject anything else.
- Ship two example pipelines: a cron one (daily 08:00, fetch a weather API, push
to ntfy) and a webhook one (POST in, append a row to a CSV).
- No accounts, no telemetry, no visual editor.
- Out of scope: OAuth flows for third-party apps (token-based APIs only) and any
connector catalog. A service that only offers OAuth will cost an afternoon each,
  say so in the README.
- README: systemd unit, how to add a pipeline, .env layout.

What would building your own look like?

Write scripts or an n8n/Activepieces flow to call the handful of APIs you actually need.

What you will need

Why paying can still make sense

They pay because every new app connection is already packaged and maintained.

Frequently asked questions
Can I rebuild Zapier?

Kinda. The core of Zapier is buildable in a weekend with the prompt on this page, but there are real gaps: integration catalog, OAuth maintenance. Read the honest list above before committing.

How much does Zapier cost?

Zapier costs about $29.99/mo (Professional, checked 10/20/2026), which is $240 per year.

What do I lose by replacing Zapier?

Honestly: integration catalog; OAuth maintenance; retries/history; nontechnical builder; app triggers/actions; uptime. If any of those are load-bearing for you, keep paying.

Is there an open-source alternative to Zapier?

Yes: Activepieces Community Edition (Zapier with a Docker bill and no task meter.) Automatisch (A smaller AGPL Zapier clone for ordinary trigger-action flows.) n8n Community Edition (The standard self-hosted answer: broad, durable, and fair-code rather than open source.)
